Hyderabad: RTA officials to crack down on tax defaulters

Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials have decided to conduct special drives throughout the city and crack the whip on vehicles that have defaulted on their tax dues.

Some defaulters were to have dues pending to the tune of Rs 1 lakh, prompting authorities to send them periodic reminders and intercept vehicles on the road. According to RTA officials, approximately 5,000 transport vehicles have defaulted on their tax dues across all RTA offices in all zones in the city.

As per RTA sources, defaulters owe RTA taxes and arrears ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 1 lakh. These taxes are levied on all vehicles that have commercial licenses and contract carriage licenses, such as automobiles, buses, and trucks.

Officials said that the dues on some vehicles were piling up as the vehicles were seized by loan recovery agents.

Motor vehicle inspectors (MVIs) have been deputed across various check posts for the special drive, and officials hope to recover the taxes as soon as possible.

In Telangana, the cost of a new vehicle is determined by adding a lifetime road tax to the showroom price. The age of the vehicle, make and manufacturer, fuel type, length and width of the vehicle, engine capacity, and other factors all play a role in determining the road tax a vehicle owner must pay. The seating capacity and number of wheels are also taken into account when calculating road tax.

Typically, the Transport Department levies a road tax equal to a percentage of the original vehicle cost, ensuring that taxation is consistent across vehicle categories.
