Hyderabad: State govt offers 90% waiver on property tax arrears

In order to ease the burden on those struggling with property tax arrears, the State government has come up with a One-Time Scheme (OTS) which waives 90% of interest on arrears. The waiver is valid until the fiscal year 2021-22.

A one-time scheme (OTS) was announced by the government to clear pending property tax arrears within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits and all other urban local bodies in Telangana.

If the principal amount plus 10% of interest on accumulated arrears is paid in one go, a taxpayer gets a 90% interest waiver.

According to official orders issued by Secretary for Municipal Administration and Urban Development C. Sudarshan Reddy, 90% of such penalty/interest will be adjusted against future payments for citizens who have paid their entire property tax with interest arrears and penalties up to March 2022 in the current year.

As per the GHMC Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration, Rs 1,999.24 crore is pending for property tax arrears in all ULBs, including GHMC. Its arrear interest amount was Rs 1,626.83 crore.

Therefore, they have proposed the OTS for the benefit of taxpayers. Prior to October 31, 2022, the scheme must be implemented on a mission mode and adequately publicized. It has been requested by the Secretary that the municipal officials concerned set up a mechanism for daily monitoring and ensure that the OTS is conducted transparently.

The MA&UD Department has requested that the GHMC Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration publicize the scheme and ensure a maximum number of people take advantage of it

The officials have been instructed to contact property owners who have arrears that need to be paid, to text them and to contact them over the phone, as well as to advertise the scheme in print and electronic media.
