Hyderabad: Students storm OU VC’s office demanding PhD admission notification

On Thursday evening, a group of Osmania University students stormed into the Vice Chancellor’s office, demanding that the PhD admission notification be released and that the exam be held as before, with everyone declared qualified.

The students argued with Prof. D. Ravinder about the notification and the varsity’s apparent plan to give weightage to PG marks, JRF, research proposal, and minimum marks for the interview in order to ensure maximum transparency and eliminate pressure on the Interview Board.

The Vice-Chancellor also proposed ranking based on entrance test scores, which the aspirants oppose.

The students were reportedly in a rage during their interaction with the VC, who argued that they should wait for the notification rather than assuming that the changes would jeopardize their chances. Students reportedly used abusive language when he refused to entertain them further and moved into an adjacent room in his chamber.

“We have been pressing for the issuance of PhD admission notifications for six months. Several times, we brought the issue to the Vice Chancellor’s attention. But our efforts were in vain,” said Ravi Naik, general secretary of the OU SFI.

According to university officials, the VC was forced to call the police, who forcibly removed the students. Later, Registrar Lakshminarayana filed a complaint with the police for trespassing and using abusive language against the VC.

The VC’s office must be respected, and students must be allowed to air their grievances without terrorizing the teachers, an official said.

Meanwhile, students argued that the university was attempting to change the admissions standards despite representations to the contrary. They claimed that under the new rules, students from the SC, ST, and BC categories would be denied admission. The officials, however, denied this, claiming that admissions were made in accordance with reservation guidelines and that no students from these groups would be affected.
