Hyderabad: Tomatoes turn more expensive than mangoes

The price of tomatoes has surpassed Rs. 100 per kilogram in the retail market in Hyderabad, making them more expensive than mangoes.

In Hyderabad, tomatoes are being sold for an average price of Rs. 90-110 per kilogram in the retail market, while mangoes are being sold for an average price of Rs. 50-80 per kilogram.

The price of tomatoes in the city was between Rs. 10 and Rs. 12 per kilogram in the first week of April. In the first week of May, it reached Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 per kilogram.

Price of mangos in Hyderabad

The price of mangos has fallen slightly in Hyderabad. The price of benishan mangoes in the retail market has dropped from Rs. 80-100 per kilogram two weeks ago to Rs. 50-70 per kilogram now. There was a slight decrease in the price of other mango varieties as well.

Why tomato prices are increasing

On the vegetable price list in Hyderabad, tomatoes are the second most expensive vegetable after onions. For the past two weeks, tomato prices have been steadily rising in the city. This trend is likely to continue until mid-June.

The city’s tomato prices have increased due to soaring heat and unexpected increases in fuel prices. Farmers are not able to grow enough crops due to the severe heat.

As a result of the hot, humid summer days, the tomato supply in the city is becoming less plentiful.

This is why, tomatoes are reportedly coming from different states, including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, making them even more expensive for customers.

Traders have to pay heavy transportation charges since 70% of the tomatoes come from other states, which leads to higher prices.

A month ago, tomato prices were 10 per kilogram, but this month they reached Rs 50 per kilo a result of the heatwave, tomato prices in Delhi have also gone up. Wholesale and retail vegetable sellers report a 400 per cent increase in tomato prices over the previous year. Retailers are selling it at a price of Rs 65-80 per kg this year.
