Hyderabad University Union Demands Withdrawal of FIRs against Students

On Sunday the Student’s Union of the University of Hyderabad condemned the registration of FIRs against 14 students who took part in protests against the CAA and the NRC in February this year.

According to the First Information Reports (FIR) the “Witch-Hunting” of student activists by the Telangana Police, the union on Sunday staged a protest on the campus.

The Union told that Telangana Police filed an FIR against the student activists of the University on the charge of being a part of a peaceful protest march. Which was organized in February by the (HCC) HCU Coordination Committee against the anti-constitutional acts (CAA) Citizenship Amendment Act and (NRC) National Register of Citizens.

The march was organized by the student activists in February from the University of Hyderabad to (MANUU) Maulana Azad National Urdu University and members of various student political organizations were collectively leading the rally.

The Cyberabad Police registered a FIRs against students of the University of Hyderabad belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Delhi, and Bihar, the union strongly reacted to the Cyberabad Police.

The students illegally gathered and marched to Maulana Azad National Urdu University. The Cyberabad Police allegedly told that the students tried to disturb the peaceful atmosphere on the campus through their speeches, According to the police.

The Union told in a statement: “This is not the first time that the Telangana Police has intervened in lawful and peaceful protests and rallies taken out by Hyderabad University students. Several protest marches by the Students’ Union were forcefully stopped by the police. They even detained an entire group of students to stop them from joining a massive protest that took place outside the university.”

On January 26, union members along with 22 student activists were booked by the Telangana Police on fake charged for organizing a ‘Save Constitution’ rally to the Ambedkar Statue at Masjid Banda, it told.

They also told that: “We have been witnessing how the Delhi Police under the direction of the central government has been hunting activists slapping them with draconian laws like UAPA for voicing against CAA and NRC. Now, the Telangana Police have also stooped to the same level wherein they target and hunt students who engage politically and raise questions to the state,”

The Union also added that: “We vehemently condemn this move of Telangana Police to charge FIR on student activists of HCC for exercising their constitutional rights to raise their voice against injudicious and draconian, divisive and bigotry politics of the state. We request the student community to stand united in solidarity with the students of the University of Hyderabad in the fight against the fascist regime and the anti-constitutional CAA-NRC,”.
