Hyderabad users to get more accurate directions on Google Maps

The Hyderabad Traffic Police has partnered with Google to provide maps of accurate routes within the city. In this way, commuters can avoid routes that are closed due to various reasons.

An app was provided by Google to the traffic police so that commuters could receive accurate routes. The app allows cops to announce road closures, diverted traffic, waterlogging, etc.

Google Maps will automatically block routes that are not available to commuters and suggest a better alternative route after receiving the information.

Cops used to notify Google a day in advance of traffic diversion, closed routes, etc. Due to time constraints, all requests were not responded to despite sending the information.

Cops can now provide information about routes in the city via the new app, which will be updated immediately on Google Maps.

“We received an app from the company that is installed on our tablets. It will be used by officials to give updates on issues such as waterlogging or road closures. Immediately, the particular route will be blocked on the map and an alternative route displayed,” DCP (Traffic) N Prakash Reddy said.

“Now, if there is a road problem, it will appear immediately on the screen. People will be able to avoid that route. It will be more helpful to cab drivers and auto-rickshaw riders, as well as people who travel to unfamiliar spots within the city,” he said.

Traffic Police personnel could be better utilized because they wouldn’t need to be rushed to a particular location to manage traffic, he said, noting that the facility would save commuters time.

In addition, Google is planning to build its largest campus outside its Mountain View HQ in the US. The campus will cover a sprawling 7.3-acre site that the company acquired at Gachibowli in 2019.
