Hyderabad Water Board to allow cashless payments

As part of its efforts to encourage cashless payments and to eliminate the need to wait for meter readers, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has launched a self-billing system.

Through this system, the HMWS&SB app allows consumers to take meter readings, generate instant bills, and pay through any Android device.

For this, consumers should download the HMWS&SB app from Google Playstore, scan the meter to take the reading, and forward the reading with the payment to the Water Board. It has already been downloaded by over 1,200 consumers and they have already started paying their water bills online.

Advantages of self-billing system

As per reports, HMWS&SB officials said that the self-billing system has its own upsides. There is no need for consumers to wait for the meter reader since billing is on time. Consumers will be able to better understand their usage patterns and conserve water as a result.

As well as empowering consumers, it enables instant payments, said, HMWS&SB officials.

HMWS&SB plans to go completely cashless

According to reports, the HMWS&SB intends to go completely “cashless” over the next two months, opting to accept bill payments only digitally.

Around 30% to 40% of consumers who do not take advantage of the 20KL free water scheme still pay their bills in cash, and the Water Board hopes to end this practice once and for all by encouraging online and UPI payments.

Following the implementation of the 20KL free water scheme, the HMWS&SB’s monthly revenue has dropped to around Rs 70 crore per month, of which Rs 50 crore is ‘cashless.’

Over 60% of consumers are taking advantage of the 20KL free water scheme, leaving approximately 4.5 lakh Consumer Account Numbers (CANs) being billed monthly. Of these, 46,000 are ‘non-domestic’ consumers who pay around Rs 67 crore.

Meter readers will visit every household and produce an electronic copy as well as a paper bill to customers, who can pay their bills using any of the available payment apps or by visiting e-Seva or MeeSeva centers.
