Hyderabad’s markets to be modernized

Five modern markets, in various stages of implementation, proposed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) promise much-needed relief for street vendors and their customers.

By demolishing the existing dilapidated markets, these modern markets will not only provide decent space for street vendors to run their businesses but will increase the safety of customers as well.

Narayanguda’s modern market is currently under construction with an estimated budget of Rs 4 crore, and it will have 54 shops on 757.89 square yards.

Additionally, administrative sanction has been accorded to two more markets, one at a cost of Rs 13.2 crore in Ameerpet and another at a cost of Rs 6.7 crore in Punjagutta. Another two markets have also been proposed, one opposite Prasads Multiplex near NTR Marg and another at Chilkalguda.

These new markets will be equipped with illumination, platforms to display vegetables, adequate seating for vendors in front of their stalls, bulbs, fans, and parking spaces.

The markets in Punjagutta, Narayanguda, and Ameerpet will be four-storied structures with a cellar and stilt floor for parking vehicles.

As per the reports, the Ameerpet market will be 1,174 square yards in size and will house 82 shops as well as two office rooms. The Punjagutta Modern Market will have 45 shops and two office rooms on 801 square yards.

Once completed, these new modern markets will provide relief from the summer heat and rain for street vendors and customers. Currently, vegetables, meat, and other products sold in markets are exposed to dust and flies which raise hygiene concerns but the new facilities will eliminate these issues while also improving cleanliness and hygiene, according to GHMC officials.

The officials reportedly stated that the provision of dedicated parking areas will address traffic issues on road stretches leading to these markets.
