India Becomes Second Largest Exporter of Sugar After Brazil

As per the latest reports, the government on Wednesday guaranteed that India has turned into the biggest exporter of sugar in the world in the year 2022-23, a greater number than Brazil, while it would be the second-biggest exporter of sugar.

Sugar production in 2018-19 was 332 lakh metric tons (LMT) subsequent to limiting redirection of 3 LMT for ethanol; in 2019-20, it was 274 LMT (in the wake of limiting redirection of 9 LMT for ethanol); in 2020-21, the production expanded to 310 LMT (in the wake of limiting redirection of 22 LMT for ethanol) and for 2021-22, it is 335 LMT (subsequent to limiting redirection of 35 LMT for ethanol).

The production of sugar has expanded thus has sugar sends out. In sugar seasons 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, just around 6.2 LMT, 38 LMT and 59.60 LMT of sugar was traded. “In sugar season 2020-21 against focus of 60 LMT, around 70 LMT have been traded. In the ebb and flow sugar season 2021-22, against the projected 100 LMT sends out, contracts for commodity of around 90 LMT have been endorsed, around 82 LMT sugar has been dispatched from sugar factories for trade and roughly 78 LMT have been sent out. Product of sugar in ebb and flow sugar season 2021-22 is the generally most noteworthy,” Subodh Singh, Joint Secretary, Food, told media people.

Around 80% of sugar is delivered in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka and on the grounds that the two states south of Narmada are closer to the ports, trade happens more from these states.
