In the latest update from the airline industry, the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Lucknow has directed the IndiGo airlines to pay a sum of Rs 85.5 lakh as compensation and damaged to the compliant Vinay Shankar Tiwari for unfair trade practice and deficiency in service.

IndiGo To Compensate For Mental Agony, Harassment

As per the latest reports, the Commission member Rajendra Singh in his order stated that IndiGo had to pay Rs 35 lakh as compensation. Then a sum of Rs 50 lakh for mental agony and harassment. Along with Rs 50,000 as the cost of the case and the interest rate of 10 percent per annum.

The incident happened back on April 15, 2013. Vinay Shankar Tiwari had booked a flight from Lucknow to Delhi via Cleartrip. His PNR number was ERBVLS of IndiGo flight no 6 E-141. The departure time was at 10:50am. He reached the airport, checked in the flight and occupied his allotted seat No 5A.

Just before the take off, the cabin crew informed Tiwari that his ticket has been cancelled adn rudely removed him from the flight. Tiwari then inquired with the Cleartrip and was informed that there has been no cancellations of the ticket from their side

Stranger Cancelled Tiwari’s Ticket

Upon further inquiry into the matter, IndiGo revealed that someone named Shailendra had cancelled the ticket in the morning at 7:38 am. Following this, the state commission held that if the ticket was presumed to be cancelled in the morning then why was Tiwari allowed to board the flight or check in to the flight. IndiGo airlines had neither submitted the mobile number of the person who cancelled the tickets nor did they inform Tiwari of the same.

After going through the entire case and evidence available on record, the State Commission stated that there was deficiency of service from the airline’s side and they have also committed unfair trade practice with a passenger.
