‘Is it RGI or GMR Hyderabad airport?’ Congress asks KCR for clarification

Dasoju Sravan, AICC spokesperson, urged K Chandrasekar Rao to seek clarification from the Hyderabad airport authorities whether the name of former PM Rajiv Gandhi had been removed.

He said it’s listed as GMR Hyderabad International Airport on the website. In a letter to KCR, he said the CM should look into the matter and make sure Rajiv Gandhi’s name is restored.

A hall of fame, photo and statue of Rajiv Gandhi should be put up at the airport as a mark of respect for the former PM, whose 31st death anniversary was observed on Saturday.

Telangana’s Congress leaders paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on the anniversary of his death on Saturday. TPCC president A Revanth Reddy and senior Congress leaders decorated Rajiv Gandhi’s statue in Somajiguda and his portrait in Gandhi Bhavan.

CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka said Rajiv Gandhi’s efforts led to Indians heading multinational corporations around the world. He said that Gandhi’s achievements include providing powers to Gram Panchayats, reducing the voting age to 18 years, introducing various types of technologies in India, including cell phones, providing drinking water to households, and forming the HRD Ministry.

Hyderabad airport

In March 2008, the airport was officially opened. Previously, Begumpet Airport served the residents of the city as the only civil airport.

In 2009, the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway was completed in order to reduce travel times between the city and the airport. The 13-kilometre expressway connects Mehdipatnam and Aramghar.

It is India’s largest airport in terms of area. Between April 2021 and March 2022, it handled over 12,4 million passengers and over 1.4 lakh tons of cargo, making it India’s fourth busiest airport.

As of right now, the airport is being owned and operated by GHIAL, a public-private partnership.
