Italy Lifts Covid 19 Restrictions; Areas Under “White Zone”

After over a year of being under restrictions and the fear of the Covid 19, Italy finally has announced all the regions under the “white zone”. It means that the areas have the lowest level of anti-covid restriction in the country’s four-tiered system.

Covid Restrictions Relaxed in Italy 

As per the latest reports, all regions in Italy have become “white zones”. From Monday, people are no longer required to facemasks outside except for the large gatherings. However, facemasks are still mandatory on public transports, in all the public offices and indoor spaces.

At the same time, facemasks are “strongly recommended” while being around vulnerable people like the elderly. The technical-scientific committee advising the government on the coronavirus emergency suggested.

Health Minister Roberto Speranza announced the same on June 25. He signed a specific decree that allows all the regional authorities to lift the Covid 19 related restrictions. This is based on the positive pandemic trends that the data showed in the past months.

The latest monitoring report from the National Health Institute (ISS) showed a coronavirus incidence lower than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in all of Italy’s 20 regions and autonomous provinces for more than three weeks.

Italy To Remain Cautious Of Covid 19 Variants 

Meanwhile, the health authorities have remained cautious over the spread of the Covid 19 variants across the country. Especially, the Delta and Kappa strains that is spreading fast and has accounted for 16.8 percent of all new infections in Italy.

The ISS said that there is a growing number of outbreaks of the virus variants and some are being registered in Italy. It further noted that the Delta variant has been pushing cases in other countries even if the vaccination campaign has reached a large number.

The ISS also said that the pressure over the public health system is relatively low with an average of only 4 percent occupancy of beds in the ICUs. As of Monday, over 17.7 million (32.9 percent) people in Italy are fully vaccinated. And 49.8 million vaccine doses have been administered.
