KTR Demands Centre to Scrap Cess on Petrol, Diesel

Lashing out at the Centre for asking the States to reduce VAT (Value Added Tax) on fuel, IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao has demanded the Narendra Modi government scrap the fuel cess and bring prices down to 2014 levels.

He was reacting to the Centre’s move to slash the excise duty on petrol and diesel and the subsequent demands by the opposition in the State that the Telangana government also cut Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel to ease the burden on the common man.

KTR tweeted that crude prices in May 2014 and now in May 2022 are almost the same yet petrol was Rs 70 per litre then and Rs 120 now. “Telangana VAT has remained unchanged. So what & who caused price rise & who is responsible,” he asked.

The Minister further tweeted, “Special Additional Excise duty, Road & Infrastructure Cess & Agriculture & Infrastructure Development Cess. All unilaterally imposed by the union Government are responsible for hike. Revenues from the above are NOT shared with States. If CESS are scrapped, Fuel prices will be at 2014 level(sic),”

Stating that the union government is responsible for rising fuel prices in the country, KTR further advised that if the ‘cess’ was scrapped, fuel prices would automatically fall down to the prices prevailing in 2014.
