Lawyer Mahmood Pracha Surveys Waqf Properties in Hyderabad, Highlights Encroachments and Calls for Action

Mahmood Pracha, an eminent lawyer, has begun a survey of waqf properties in Hyderabad, beginning with a visit to Chilla Moula Ali in Panjagutta. This ancient sanctuary, which formerly covered 12,000 square yards, has been encroached upon from all sides, resulting in a limited entrance and unlawful structures surrounding it. During his visit, Pracha paid his respects at the shrine, spoke with the Mutawalli (caretaker), and met with Shia community representatives. He inspected the waqf paperwork and criticised the encroachments, calling them unlawful and accusing the Waqf Board. Due of the large number of Shia waqf holdings, Pracha also argued for the establishment of a distinct Shia Waqf Board.

Pracha then went to Masjid e Ahle Sunnat in Rasoolpura’s Gun Bazar, another Hyderabad waqf property. This notified waqf property has been in existence for 400 years and contains Dargah Khaki Shah and a graveyard. It was officially recognised in the Gazette in 1978. However, encroachments have decreased its original area of 8,760 square yards to 2,500 square yards. The Masjid Committee, led by Secretary Mohd Lateef Khan, has been working diligently to maintain the land and has won many battles against those who reject its waqf status despite being original tenants.

The dargah’s state is deplorable, with abandoned automobiles put on top of graves by a nearby car mechanic aiming to grab the site. Mehmood Pracha and his team were shocked to see this. Pracha claimed after studying the documents that a solid case could be developed and effectively contested. He emphasised that corrupt Waqf Board officials, like Amanatullah, Chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board, would face incarceration.

Following the tour of waqf properties, the crew went to Makkah Masjid for Friday prayers.
