Lucky’s Biryani House slapped with Rs 55,000 fine for charging Rs 5.50 extra for bottled water

Lucky’s Biryani House in Tilak Nagar was fined Rs 55,000 by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for charging a customer Rs 5.50 extra for a packaged water bottle. The Commission also ordered the restaurant management to refund Rs 5.50 with a 10% interest rate.

Chilukuri Vamshi, an Osmania University student, complained to the Commission after being charged Rs 5.50 more than the MRP for a packaged water bottle. He further said that when questioned, management utilized abusive language and behaviour.

Taking into account the evidence and arguments presented, the Commission ordered the restaurant to pay a Rs 50,000 fine to the court, Rs 5,000 to the complainant within 45 days for litigation costs and other inconveniences that occurred, and to return the Rs 5.50 collected from him as charges with 10% interest per annum.

Hotel penalized Rs 25,000 for charging Rs 10 extra for water bottle

In 2021, The Meridian Restaurant at Punjagutta Crossroads had been ordered by the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Hyderabad to repay the extra amount of Rs.10 charged to customer Mohammed Mohsin with an interest of 12% per annum, in addition to paying a fine of Rs.25,000.

According to Mohsin, a Dilsukhnagar resident, he had lunch at the restaurant and was charged Rs.10 in addition to the maximum retail price of Rs.20 for a drinking water bottle.

“When I asked the management why an additional Rs.10 was being charged, I was told that is a common practice here,” Mohsin remembered, who subsequently approached the Consumer Forum and filed a complaint against the restaurant.

On January 19 2021, the forum issued orders instructing the management to repay the Rs.10 with a 12-percentage-point interest. Aside from that, Rs.25,000 fine was imposed on the Meridian Restaurant management, according to Mohsin.
