Maharashtra Boat Capsize: 13 Rescued, 2 Women Drown

Gadchiroli:  In Maharashtra, two women have feared drowned as 18 hours have elapsed by after a boat Capsize at a remote spot on Indravati River, while 13 of their co-passengers, including 10 men, were safely rescued, authorities said here on Wednesday.

The episode happened late Tuesday when the boat conveying 15 villagers, including 5 women, unexpectedly overturned close to Somanpalli town.

An authority of Gadchiroli Police said to IANS, “Mobilising rescue teams immediately, we managed to rescue 10 men and 3 women while a search continues for the 2 missing women who are presumed dead.”

They have been recognized as Kanta Satyam Yellam and Shanta Shivayya Gawde as the search proceeded 18 hours after they disappeared.

The 15-member village group had gone to attend the thirteenth-day post-funeral rites of some relative in Atukpalli village in the Bijapur area of adjoining Chhattisgarh state, on the opposite side of the stream.

The mishap happened close to the Somanpalli town on the return journey. The search activity was continued on Wednesday for the two missing women, the authority stated.

In 2018, another Maharashtra Boat Capsize had occurred, where an “error of judgment” on part of the captain of the twin-motor boat in not taking a longer course could be the primary reason behind the boat overturn episode in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai coast Wednesday, said a survivor.

He said the captain should have taken a longer course to arrive at the site of the proposed Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial on the grounds that the region, known as Prongs Reef Lighthouse, is rough and rocky.

He stated the boat hit the rocky patch when it was about 400 meters away from the Mumbai coast.

Around 24-25 individuals, including two or three state government authorities, were present on the boat at the hour of the mishap, he stated.

The reporter said that travelers fell on one another after the boat hit a rocky fix.

He felt “an error of judgment” on part of the captain may have prompted the accident.

He said that some of them couldn’t get the chance to wear life jackets after the accident, supposedly because of a shortage.
