More Than 10L US Kids Test COVID-19 Positive, Says Report

New York: More than 1,000,000 (10 lakh) kids in the US have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since the beginning of the pandemic in the country, as per the most recent information.

As per the report, the number of new child COVID-19 cases recorded for the current week, almost 112,000, is by far the highest weekly increase since the pandemic had started.

The information issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children’s Hospital Association recently said that as of November 12, the complete number of child COVID-19 cases recorded were 1,039,464, and it was about 11.5 per cent of all cases.

Despite the fact that it had given the idea that the severe illness because of COVID-19 is rare among kids, there is an urgent need to gather more information on longer-term impacts on kids, including ways the virus may harm the long term physical wellbeing of infected kids, as well as its emotional and mental health impacts, the report said.

AAP said in a statement, “Overall rate is 1,381 cases per 100,000 children in the population.”

Sally Goza, AAP President, called the information “staggering and tragic.” Children are substantially more likely than adults to have mild cases however hospitalisations and deaths do occur.

The information shows that at least 6,330 paediatric hospitalisations and 133 deaths have occurred since May, based on reports from state health departments.

The age distribution of recorded COVID-19 cases was given on the health department sites of 49 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

There was a 17 per cent rise in child COVID-19 cases over two weeks, from October 22 to November 5.

As of Tuesday morning, total COVID-19 cases and the death count over the globe remained at 5,48,26,773 and 13,25,752 respectively, Johns Hopkins University’s Centre for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) said in its most recent update.

The US is the worst-hit country with 1,11,97,791 cases and 2,47,142 COVID-19 deaths, as per the CSSE. India comes in second place as far as the number of cases is concerned, in spite of the fact that its daily surge has dipped in November.
