Much-awaited Old City metro line continues to remain neglected

As a result of the announcement of the extension of the Hyderabad Metro Rail to Kandukur, questions have been raised about the much-awaited Old City line.

While launching Haritha Haram Phase-9 in Tumuluru village, Ranga Reddy, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao said on Monday that the extension of the Hyderabad Metro Rail up to the Shamshabad airport will be a reality soon. He also stated that it would be extended to Kandukur, which is part of the Maheshwaram constituency.

P Sabitha Indra Reddy, the Education Minister, proposed that the metro rail be extended to Kandukur, and the Chief Minister answered affirmatively, deeming it a legitimate request that merits prompt consideration.

He was disappointed that the previous regime had excluded the Shamshabad airport from the earliest phases of the metro rail, describing it as a huge miscalculation that needed to be corrected.

Last year, KCR laid the foundation stone for the Hyderabad Airport Express Metro, a major 31-kilometer-long project that will connect the Hitec City information technology district to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad.

The budget for the Old City metro line was allocated in the previous year. Despite announcements and budget allocations, however, no concrete steps have been taken on the ground for the project.

Again, an allocation of Rs 500 crore was made in the Telangana State Assembly budget for 2023-24 for extending Metro Rail services to the Old City.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail has played an important role in transforming the city’s transportation landscape; however, the same service has not yet been made available in the old city.
