“Murgi Chowk” set to regain its glory in Hyderabad

In Old City, the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) is planning to rebuild the dilapidated Mahboob Chowk market (Murgi Chowk) to its former glory. QQSUDA, which is in charge of the project, has finalized the blueprint for the reconstruction of Murgi Chowk Market at Laad Bazaar near Charminar. At a cost of Rs 36 crore, the design will house 193 shops.

Located in Hyderabad’s Old City, Murgi Chowk has more than 200 shops primarily selling birds besides meat. The market has existed since the early 20th century. Prior to this, the market was deemed unfit by JNTU, Hyderabad after a preliminary assessment was made in 2018. In the end, a more detailed condition analysis undertaken by a group of conservation architects and others suggested both structural and architectural restoration might be possible.

QQSUDA estimates that nearly 90 per cent of the shops need extensive restoration. As a result, different interventions have been proposed during the last three years, ranging from restoring the market’s pattern and place all the way to complete reconstruction. According to officials from QQSUDA, the major portion of the market complex is in structural distress, so it is better to rebuild on the basis of form-based conservation and reuse.” An official from QQSUDA stressed, “A proposal has been made to rebuild the complex in its original design with an additional floor.”

This proposed market complex would have a zone for meat and poultry related businesses as well as infrastructures such as drainage and wastewater treatment. As one additional floor is also being constructed, shop spaces will increase from 200 to 232 and retail shops from 70 to 96. 136 new shops will have dedicated access from the approach roads, which will not interfere with the retail zone within the same market complex.” As the market is located on the west side of Charminar, near Laad Bazaar, the encroachments along the Mahboob Chowk Clock Tower will be relocated. The market will be developed with roads, streetlights, benches, gardens, and landscaping.”
