Nizam’s grandson to file case in HC over plan to demolish King Koti Palace

Himayat Ali Mirza, the grandson of Mir Osman Ali Khan who was the last Nizam of Hyderabad, expressed his concern over the battle for ownership of the palace which was the official residence of Mir Osman Ali Khan. Himayat Ali Mirza said he intends to file a case in the high court to stop the possible demolition of the structure.

As there is more than one claimant to the palace, he also requested a CBI investigation into the sale of the Nizam’s property. Having lived in the palace since he was 13 and dying there, the King Kothi Palace was dear to the Nizam, he said.

A few yards away from the palace is the Masjid-e-Judi, where he was buried. There are two real estate companies claiming ownership over the palace, while the Nizam’s Trust remains silent.

The Times of India had quoted Himayar Ali Mirza as saying that Moazzam Jah, his grandfather, was married in the palace and many famous politicians and dignitaries, including Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, Indira Gandhi, the king of Saudi Arabia and many members of the British royal family have visited the palace to meet the Nizam.

Himayat Ali believes that King Koti is the last major symbol of the last king of princely Hyderabad’s legacy structure.

In a writ petition filed with the high court, he says he is seeking an injunction to prevent the demolition of any part of the King Koti royal compound.

It should be converted into a hospital to provide free medical care to the public. In the event that the palace is renovated, it should be renamed Nizam’s Hospital; otherwise, he will not remain silent if history and cultural monuments such as King Koti Palace are demolished.

He said the Nizam wanted to be buried opposite the palace where his mother Zehra Begum is buried. While many of the Nizams have been buried in Mecca Masjid, the last Nizam wanted to be buried beside his mother’s grave near the King Kothi Palace.
