No Tsunami Threat to India After Japan Earthquakes, Confirms ITEWC

The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC), based in Hyderabad, issued a statement to allay fears of a tsunami threat to India in the aftermath of severe earthquakes in Japan.

The earthquake activity caused waves up to 5 meters high, causing a tsunami warning for Russia’s Far East and particular areas of Japan.

The ITEWC, which is in charge of monitoring sea level fluctuations near the epicenter, has stated that there is no immediate tsunami threat to India. While the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for the country’s western coast, including multiple prefectures, the ITEWC emphasized that India is not under any tsunami watch.

The latest large tsunami to hit India was the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, which was caused by underwater seismic activity. This calamitous event prompted the founding of the ITEWC in October 2007, with headquarters at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad. The center is an important part of India’s early warning system for potential tsunami disasters.

Since the 2004 disaster, India, along with other countries, has been actively improving its capacities to identify and respond to tsunami threats. During seismic events, the ITEWC’s early communication and clarification are critical in keeping the public informed and assuaging anxieties.
