Old city stink as ‘unhygienic practice’ remain a blot on its face

Garbage collection in the old city becomes a real-time test of GHMC’s patience as rough people in colonies aren’t giving a hoot to the rules aimed to make the city clean and tidy – more so to stave off the residents from seasonal diseases.

While the people are complaining about the GHMC’s failure in attending calls for garbage collection, the civic officials are portraying the picture completely another way around.

“Most of the people in colonies making it difficult for the collection teams to cart away trash on time. Throwing garbage on open plots or at nearby neighboring houses instead of handing it over to collection teams became routine. There were several incidents were rough people resorted to bellicose rhetoric with the garbage collection teams and even with the officials if questioned there unhygienic practice,” informed a senior sanitary officer on the request of anonymity.

“The garbage teams were task to moved out the trash to dump yard by 10.30 to 11.00 am in the morning every day but the awful thing they are experiencing that most of the peoples in colonies are not at all cooperating with them. Some families woke up late in the morning by the time the garbage collection teams were moved away from their area. Later they throw away the garbage in nearby open plots or in their surroundings only to blame the garbage collection teams later. This messy practice resulting in water stagnations in many places during the rainy season as the trash scattered all the way on the roads is moving into the stormwater lines or sewerage system only to block the free flow of the affluent,” explain the official.

“Rough people giving a hoot to the rules set by the GHMC as they were soft in nature and carries no teeth to frame the violators under cognizable sections. Officials can’t even go with deterrent auctions again them and the meager penalties ought to be imposed in the wake of such violations won’t have any efficacious impact on the arrant. Having no stricter rules would amount to giving the rough people carte blanche,” rued Mohammed Tahseen, a social activist.

“The sanitary rules and provision must be made cognizable with heavy penalties, imprisonment and confiscation of assets. This way the rough practices could be curtailed. More so, without such stricter rules the dream of Swachh Hyderabad cannot become true,” he added.

“Old city will not get salvage from poverty and illiteracy as long as the messy state of affairs continues to prevail upon.

It is very unfortunate that in an area that largely dominates by Islam – a religion primarily teaches about maintaining hygiene and one of its tenets distinctly says “cleanliness is half of Faith,” is today known for its unhygienic practices,” rued Prof. Ameeruddin, an educationist.
