OU campus to soon be demarcated into different zones

The sprawling 1,632-acre Osmania University (OU) campus here will soon be demarcated into different zones such as women’s and men’s hostels zones, administrative, and others.

According to the university’s plans, after completing the construction of the new centennial administrative building opposite the IICT gate, the current administrative building, which houses the Vice Chancellor’s office, will be converted into a women’s hostel.

Since there are other women’s hostels nearby, officials are considering converting this area into a women’s hostel zone.

Similarly, the university is planning to consolidate all of the men’s hostels into a single zone. After the proposed centennial administrative zone is completed, the area will be demarcated as the administrative zone.

Aside from that, OU has plans to build a new 500-bed engineering student hostel on campus. A proposal has been finalized and will be presented to the university’s Executive Council, which is the highest decision-making body. The proposed hostel will house boys attending the university engineering college, whose current hostel is in disrepair.

The university has been on a development spree for the last four years. So far, four new hostels have been built on campus. The university recently laid the foundation for a 500-person men’s hostel, which is expected to cost Rs 39.50 crore. The new engineering student hostel will be built along similar lines.

Previously, the varsity opened a new 500-capacity centenary hostel building for girls on campus, as well as another hostel building for girls at the Nizam College, an OU constituent college.

‘Professor of Practice’ concept

Campus, constituent, and affiliated colleges of Osmania University (OU) will soon be able to hire industry experts to teach a variety of courses as part of the university’s new Professor of Practice concept.

Under this concept, the university is planning to hire or invite experts from various fields, such as the IT industry, scientists, bureaucrats, and politicians, as well as Assembly speakers, to teach relevant subjects full-time or part-time or to deliver lectures.

The university’s move follows the University Grants Commission’s guidelines on hiring experts under the Professor of Practice program. Unlike regular teachers, there is no requirement for experts to have a PhD to teach under this concept. However, such experts must have at least 15 years of experience in the field.

Not only can colleges use experts to design course curriculum that is in line with industry requirements, but they can also use experts to improve students’ employability.

“We are planning to introduce the Professor of Practice on the university campus, constituent, and affiliated colleges from this academic year. This will be discussed in the forthcoming varsity’s Executive Council and a decision will be arrived at,” OU Vice Chancellor Prof D Ravinder was quoted as saying.
