OU to use FRS to restrict access to the mess for unauthorized persons

The Osmania University (OU) has decided to use cutting-edge technologies to record attendance, as well as to reduce unauthorized entry into the mess facilities.

CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition systems (FRS) and AI and ML at mess facilities will soon capture images of students using the mess and synchronize details such as name, roll number, and mess number with the available database.

The new initiative will provide the university administration with two benefits: recording attendance and monitoring those who use the mess facilities. It also aids mess management in cases of impersonation or when students falsely claim that they did not use the facility despite having used it. At the moment, officials at the mess record attendance in the registers against students’ mess number.

“The university has decided to integrate facial recognition systems into surveillance cameras which will be installed in the mess facilities. This new system will be implemented from this academic year itself,” a senior official said.

Currently, 808 CCTV cameras monitor the university campus, which includes colleges and various buildings. Another 215 cameras are being proposed for installation in unprotected areas.

Using technology, the university has devised plans to implement geo-attendance via a mobile application, eliminating the need for time-consuming biometric attendance.

The administration is in discussions with a company about developing a mobile application that scans the entire class at once and captures images of students. These images are then synchronized with database details such as photo, name, and roll number, and attendance is recorded. It also indicates the building’s longitude and latitude, where attendance is recorded.

“Each student takes at least 10 seconds to record their attendance through biometric machines. With a single scan, this mobile app captures the attendance of the entire class in just 90 seconds. On a pilot basis, this new initiative will be implemented in the university engineering college,” OU Vice Chancellor Prof. D Ravinder was quoted as saying.
