Power holiday for industries in Gujarat reveals hollowness of double engine growth

The Gujarat Government declared a power holiday for its industries, revealing the hollowness behind the Gujarat model of growth and the often-repeated claims of double engine growth.

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited’s announcement that it would be instituting weekly staggered holidays for industries with non-continuous work has raised quite a few eyebrows and provoked considerable criticism as well.

The Telangana region, which also faced power holidays during the undivided Andhra Pradesh in the past, solved the issue after its formation in 2014 and is supplying uninterrupted quality power to the industrial and agricultural sectors. The state of Telangana was the only one in the country offering 24×7 quality electricity to the agricultural sector.

However, a power holiday has been declared for Gujarat’s industrial sector, where powerful people reside.

IT Minister KT Rama Rao responded to the declaration of power holiday for industries in Gujarat by tweeting “Power holiday for industry in Gujarat where powerful people come from! Double engine or Trouble engine?”

Almost 60 per cent of the power used in Gujarat is consumed by industries, 22 per cent by agriculture, and 18 per cent by households.

On Tuesday, Telangana registered a record with its peak power load crossing 14,000 MW.

At 12.28 p.m. on Tuesday, the power utilities in the state registered 14,117 MW of power load. In Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) limits, more than 8,400 MW of the 14,117 MW peak load was recorded.

Due to the increased use of power by domestic consumers, the peak load was high. During this financial year, approximately six lakh new connections were added to TSSPDCL’s existing one crore connections.

Even if the peak load reaches 18 MW in the next few days, utilities are prepared to provide more power, officials said
