Property tax collection of GHMC crosses Rs 1,000 crore mark in six months

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has collected more than Rs 1,000 crores in property tax in the last six months. This is a record collection for the first six months of any fiscal year.

Between April of this year and October 28, a total of Rs 1,165.17 crore was collected by the GHMC, with Serilingampally circle leading the way with Rs 171.23 crore, followed by Jubilee Hills circle (Rs 119.49 crore) and Khairatabad circle (Rs 119.49 crore) (Rs.92 crore).

It was reported that this year, most property owners paid their taxes online, and some paid through Mee Seva centers. Several property owners paid their taxes through bill collectors, while some paid via Citizen Service Centers run by GHMC.

An amount of Rs 92.78 crore has been collected through 47,205 assessments under the One-Time Scheme (OTS) introduced in July, which is part of the Rs.1,165 crore revenue generated from April to October 28 this year.

The OTS offered relief to those struggling to pay property tax arrears, and it is set to expire on October 31. A 90 percent waiver of accumulated arrears of property tax has been ordered by the State government under this scheme. Taxpayers, however, must clear the principal amount of the tax dues until 2021-22 along with 10% accumulated interest at once.

For the purposes of increasing tax revenue under the OTS, the GHMC Commissioner has ordered that October 30, i.e., Sunday, will be a working day for those associated with the revenue generation exercise.

“As the OTS ends on Monday, the bill collectors will visit the houses on Sunday and ask people to clear the arrear interest. The activity will also be monitored by senior officials of the corporation,” said a GHMC official.
