Rajiv Gandhi Statue Defaced in Varanasi, Former Congress MP Demands Immediate Arrest of Responsible

Varanasi: On the day when Prime minister Narendra Modi is visiting Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, a few miscreants tossed ink on a statue of the former prime minister, late Rajiv Gandhi.

The district administration quickly got the statue to be cleaned up and local Congress workers poured some milk over the statue in order to ‘purify’ it.

Former Congress MP Rajesh Mishra has demanded immediate apprehension of those responsible for the incident.

A senior district official stated: “We will take action in the matter. At the moment, we are busy with the Prime Minister’s visit.”

In June of 2017, a similar incident had occurred: The statue of Rajiv Gandhi, located at a park in Mirzapur’s Awas Vikas colony was discovered to be damaged which infuriated Congress which said it would hold a statewide agitation to protest it.

Local people found the damaged statue and educated the police about the incident, after which an FIR was filed against unidentified people, Mirzapur Superintendent of Police Ashish Tiwari had said.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar had said that the act of damaging the statue of Rajiv Gandhi is shameful. The Congress condemns it and demands arrest of those guilty in the incident at the earliest.

A segment of the damaged statue was discovered from a close-by drain, he told reporters in Lucknow.

A delegation of Congress heads additionally met the district magistrate in Mirzapur and demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for it and invocation of National Security Act (NSA) against them.
