RTI activist beaten to death for seeking information

Questioning has sometimes proved fatal, as in the case of an RTI worker in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district who was allegedly attacked by eight people, including the village head and his son, over the quality of public projects underway in the area. But he was beaten for raising questions. The family of the victim told the police that 32-year-old Devjit Singh, a resident of Gorai village under Aglas police circle, was killed when he and his brother were tending to their farm. The victim’s brother was also seriously injured in the incident.

Devjit’s father Mahendra Singh said, “My son filed an RTI query two months ago to get information about the quality of development work done by the village pradhan. He asked for construction in the village. said. Also filed several complaints with various authorities alleging misuse of content. and demanding appropriate action. Since then we have been receiving death threats. Filed a complaint against. Approached the police but no action was taken.”

Giving details of the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Raghavendra Singh said, “An FIR has been registered against Pradhan Devendra Singh, his son Karthik and six others under various sections of the IPC, including 302 ( Murder), 147 (riots) included. 506(506). Criminal intimidation and others. Accused are absconding. Efforts are on to arrest them.

The victim’s uncle Ramveer Singh said, “The village pradhan and his relatives brutally attacked my nephews with sticks and sharp weapons. We reached the spot on receiving information about the attack. Devjit sustained severe head injuries and died. He passed away. He has gone to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. His younger brother Surendra is in a critical condition and is being treated in the same hospital.”

According to locals, Devjit ran a computer center in the village and also helped his father in agricultural work. He is survived by his wife of 28 years and two young children.
