Sankranti rush: Roads leading out of Hyderabad witness congestion

On Thursday, all the roads leading out of the city were congested with people heading to their native towns and cities for the Sankranti celebrations.

As per the latest reports, vehicular traffic began to pick up in the city suburbs that connect the State and National highways to the Outer Ring Road in the early hours. Long convoys of cars came in from various parts of the city and headed out to various destinations on the 158 km expressway of the ORR.

The rush was visible at almost all of the toll gates, as cars and vans waited to pass through. The FASTags, on the other hand, aided in the faster clearance of vehicles. Given the high volumes on the highways, the reliance on personal vehicles appeared to be greater this festival season.

The demand for public transportation also peaked, with the booking of seats soaring.  Families waited for their bus at the passenger pick-up locations of private bus fleets from the evening until late at night. Besides from towns and cities of Telangana, demand was high for destinations in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the TSRTC has put up special camps for passengers waiting to board buses in normally congested areas with high passenger traffic, such as Uppal cross-road, LB Nagar, Aramghar, and KPHB. Tents, chairs, drinking water, and mobile bio-toilets were set up in these areas for the comfort of passengers.

According to TSRTC Managing Director VC Sajjanar, 4,233 special buses have been arranged for people travelling to their hometowns on Sankranti. “We are running special buses with regular fares without any hike and a 10 percent discount on the return journey is being given to passengers who made their reservations in advance,” he said.

TSRTC buses have also been given special lanes at toll plazas so that people can get to their destinations as soon as possible.
