Scotland Police Detains and Releases Two Indian Nationals on Eid; Neighbors Protest

Scotland recently saw the wrath of hundreds of protesters in support of two Indian nationals from the detention van.

Hundreds Take To Streets To Protect Two Indian Nationals 

As per the latest reports, two men were removed from their flat and lodged in a UK Home Office detention van. The Home Office reported that the both were accused of “suspected immigration offences”.

Soon after they were taken, hundreds of people from the area gathered around the detention van. One of them even crawled under the van to prevent it from leaving the area. Some of the protestors even shouted “let our neighbours go”.

The incident took place in Glasgow’s Kenmure Street. Following the Indian national’s release, Police Scotland released a statement. They said that to protect the safety, public health and the well-being of everyone involved in the detention. And the protest that followed at Kenmure Street, Pollokshields, Ch Supt Mark Sutherland. They have decided to release the men detained by the UK Immigration Enforcement back to their community.

Scottish Government Members Condemn Detention 

The detention of the two Indian national men was not only condemned by the protesters but also by some of the government officials. Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that the incident was “unacceptable”. She assured that the she will filing for assurances from the UK government to ensure that they do not create any such dangerous situation again.

She further said that the police officers were put an “invidious position” as they had detained the individuals from a Muslim Community during the celebrations of Eid.
Scottish government’s Justice Secretary, Humza Yousaf said that the detention was “completely reckless” and a situation like this should not have occurred in the first place.

At the same time, the Sikh community in Scotland also made a statement. They said after this incident, they are “deeply concerned” about the people. They further urged the Home Office to “abandon forced removals and to adopt an immigration policy based on human rights, compassion and dignity”.
