Sewerage inflows from colonies keep on polluting Mir Alam Lake

Even though a sewage diversion canal under Mission Kakatiya has been constructed around the Mir Alam Lake to divert the sewerage gushing out from nearby locality into a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), the grey water from surrounding colonies are still marking into the water body and keep on polluting the Lake.

The diversion canal of total 6.5 kilometres of length has been constructed with a cost of around Rs7.00 crores to protect the Lake from pollution by diverting the grey water emanating from surrounding areas to Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) located on the bank of the Lake near Mir Alam Filter.

However, the officials argued that no measures were taken so far to connect the sewerage inlets with the diversion canal that keeps on polluting the water body. “Though we have informed the (HMWS&SB) about the same, the matter has not yet been taken up to resolve the issue. There is a proposal to set up a fountain at the middle of the Lake under Lake Beautification Project but it would not serve any purpose if the sewerage inlets remain unconnected with the diversion canal,” informed an official on the condition of anonymity.

The rudimentary works have already been grounded for setting up a fountain at the middle of the Mir Alam Lake under Lake Beautification Project as the GHMC has proposed to promote a cable bridge similar to the one raised at Durgam Cheruvu.

According to officials, the work of walking track has already been completed while Cycling Track and small parks were also planned under the project. Cleaning of hyacinth is in progress that gradually swallowed the surface of the Lake carries almost 215 years of glorified history and was once known for its crystal clear water during Nizams’ era.

Covered with densely populated areas like Bahadurpura, Kishan Bagh, Attapur, Hyderguda and Rajendranagar, the Mir Alam Lake carries a history of 215 years. The grandiose Lake was constructed in the year 1804-1806 during the period of HEH Nawab Mir Akbar Ali Khan Bahadur, the Asaf Jah III, and named after Mir Alam Bahadur the then Prime Minister of Hyderabad state.
