Special teams put together by GHMC to deal with monsoon emergencies

A special team has been put together by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to deal with rain-related complaints during the downpours as part of the monsoon preparations. Teams include static labour teams, mini-mobile teams, and emergency mobile teams.

As the static labour teams will be deployed at identified water logging points in different parts of the city, the mini-mobile teams and emergency mobile teams will be deployed around the city to attend to complaints related to rain.

The teams will have needed equipment to pump out water, clear catch pits, unclog drains and untangle tangled wires. The teams will be equipped with vehicles to move around the area, pumps to drain the water, crowbars, and other equipment needed to carry out rain relief works and restore normalcy after intense rains, said an official.

They are in addition to the Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams which are pressed into service during rains.

In anticipation of heavy rains across Hyderabad this monsoon, the GHMC has trained its special team dedicated to flood monitoring.

In addition to identifying and demolishing encroachments at the Full Tank Level (FTL) of lakes, the GHMC is training its staff and engineers to operate sluice shutter gates in an emergency.

At the same time, the Corporation is taking special measures to prevent floods, waterlogging, and overflowing of lakes and nalas. During heavy rains, every zone will have a dedicated team monitoring flooding if the situation is reported.

With the help of PPT presentations, the GHMC zonal commissioners and circle-wise deputy commissioners are training their team members for the flood management system.

Lake officials will be inspecting lakes and tanks as well as monitoring flood levels. Whenever there is an emergency alert, they will inform the zonal commissioners and take necessary action.
