Sri Lanka Bans Fertilizer Import From China; India Comes In Play

After declaring ban on importing organic compost from China, Sri Lanka has announced that they would be importing the same from India. This comes after destructive bacteria was found in the compost imported from China.

Sri Lanka Drops Fertilizer Imports From China

Last month, Sri Lanka dropped the plans to import 99,000 metric tons of organic fertilizer at an expense of $63 million from China’s Qingdao Seawin Biotech Group Co Ltd. Agribusiness Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said in Parliament on Tuesday that research center tests led on the organic fertilizer tests sent from India have affirmed that they were reasonable for the utilization in Sri Lanka.

Reacting to an opposing question raised on the continuous manure emergency, he said the National Plant Quarantine Service had endorsed the compost from India.

“In case there is a deferral, a choice has been reached to import the nano-nitrogen compost from India utilizing airship cargo,” Aluthgamage said.

The opposition had scrutinized the Minister concerning how the public authority planned to take care of the issue of farmers who are trusting that compost will begin the main development season.

Government Accuses China Of “Foul Play”

The public authority needed to drop the plans to import the Chinese organic fertilizer after researchers, activists, and ideological groups firmly protested the move following the identification of a destructive bacteria recognized as ‘Erwinia’ on September 17. The government griped of “foul play” and brought one more arrangement of tests; however on September 29, they also were recognized with a harmful bacteria.

Agribusiness specialists – both autonomous and those appended to the state-organizations – had encouraged the government to drop the compost contract from China, noticing that the imported Chinese manure would make a rural catastrophe in the island country
