Sri Lanka Meteorology Department Warns Cyclone Ahead of Southwest Monsoon

After India, Sri Lanka has released an alert warning of heavy rains and strong winds in the upcoming days as a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal.

Sri Lanka Restricts Sea Ventures Around East and Central Bay of Bengal Areas Until Further Notice 

Sri Lanka Meteorology Department released a weather update and said that the strong winds with thundershowers are expected over the North Andaman Sea along with the adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal. It will further move towards the deep sea areas of the Southwest Bay of Bengal in the next couple of days. This would bring heavy rains and winds in Sri Lanka.

The Department said that areas located within the East Central Bay of Bengal are more likely to suffer the intensity of the cyclonic storm and then will move towards the northwest and will reach near the West Bengal coast by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the naval and fishing communities have been restricted from venturing into the East and Central Bay of Bengal until further notice. The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) on Sunday said that they have prepared nine helicopters on standby for relief and rescue operations in case the cyclonic storm causes any casualties.

At the same time, the Disaster Management Centre has also warned of the possibility of floods and flash floods in several parts of Sri Lanka in the next coming days because of the low-pressure area and the onset of southwest monsoon.

Sri Lanka Reports Highest Ever Fatalities In 24 Hours 

As per the latest reports, Sri Lanka recently reported 46 deaths from Covid 19 in the past 24 hours. This is the highest ever fatalities reported in the country. A total of 2906 cases were reported in 24 hours along with three foreign arrivals who are currently under quarantine.

To curb the spread, Sri Lanka has already banned public gatherings, parties and weddings. They have also shut down schools and universities.
