State government decides to bring in concept of ward governance in Hyderabad

The State government has decided to implement the concept of ward governance in Hyderabad in order to further decentralize civic body administration and bring the administration closer to the citizens.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao said on Wednesday that all 150 wards of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would have a local ward office where citizens could easily reach out to get their grievances addressed and share suggestions.

Rama Rao directed that the ward governance system be in place by the end of May. Each of these ward offices will be led by an Assistant Commissioner and staffed by field level officials from the sanitation, road maintenance, power supply, entomology, veterinary, Water Board, and Town Planning wings.

“The officials and staff will be available to receive grievances from the local residents and have them redressed quickly,” the Minister said. He emphasized that the ward governance system would eliminate the current need for citizens to visit circle or zonal offices and instead have their issues resolved locally.

The new system would also ensure more effective citizen participation in governance. “The ward governance is conceptualised in tune with Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao‘s vision of decentralising governance and taking the administration close to the people,” Rama Rao added.

The Minister directed that teams be formed to usher in the new concept and that they be trained for effective implementation.
