State ground water level Sinking

Hyderabad: Groundwater Department monitored water levels during July-2019 through 955 Piezometers (monitoring stations) covering in 589 mandals and 33 districts of Telangana state.

During the water year 2019-20 up to July 31, 2019, State received actual rainfall of 302.3 mm as against 373.4 mm normal rainfall (171.7 :Jogulamba Gadwal-583: Mulugu) which ranges from 138 mm (Nalgonda Dist) to 565 mm (Komurambheem Dist) and thus there is a 19% deficit rainfall during this period in the State as compared to normal annual rainfall. Seventeen districts, mainly located in central and northern part of State, received deficit rainfall between -21% in Medak to -40% in Nalgonda during this water year (up to July 31, 2019).

Average groundwater levels in the State during July 2019 is 14.12 meters below ground level (mbgl) and it varies from 7.39 mbgl (Komurambheem) to 27.05 mbgl (Medak). A net fall in Groundwater level of 3.20 m is observed during July 2019 as compared to last July (2018). The fall is observed in all districts and a maximum fall of -8.24 m is observed in Medchal district with a 29% deficit rainfall and minimum fall of -0.30 m is observed in Nagarkurnool district with 6% deficit rainfall.

A net rise of 0.40 m and 0.44 m in groundwater level is observed during July 2019 in comparison to June 2019 and May 2019 months respectively. Shallow water levels (<5 mbgl) occurs in ~3.8 % of state area mostly covering western parts of Asifabad & eastern part of Adilabad, northeastern part of Nirmal, northwestern part of Manchirial and southern part of Khammam districts. In the state 5 – 10 mbgl water levels are spread in ~28.5% of state area and 10-15 mbgl water levels covers ~29.6% of state area and are more predominant in the state during the month.

Moderately deep (15-20 mbgl) and very deep water levels (>20 mbgl) occupy ~19.2% and ~18.7% of State area respectively and these are mostly falling in deficit rainfall districts covering north western, central, and south western parts of State. Water levels during month of July-2019 when compared with respect to Decadal average (2009-2018) water levels, it is observed that, out of 589 mandals in 479 mandals fall in the range 0.01 – 18.75 m and in rest of 110 mandals rise in the range of 0.01 – 8.28 m is observed.

The rise up to 0.5 m is observed in 29 mandals, 0.5 – 1 m in 18 mandals, 1 – 2 m in 32 mandals and >2 m in 31 mandals.These mandals mainly fall in Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Asifabad, and Jagithyal districts etc.

The fall upto 0.5 m in 27 mandals, 0.5 – 1 m is observed in 33 mandals, 1 – 2 m in 64 mandals and >2 m in 355 mandals mostly falling in Sangareddy, Kamareddy, Rangareddy, Medak, Nizamabad, Vikarabad and Suryapet Districts etc.

The fall is mostly observed in eastern parts of Kamareddy, southern parts of Siddipet & Yadadri, parts of Medak, Sangareddy, Rangareddy & Mahabubnagar and northern parts of Nagarkurnool districts, according to Pandith Madhnure,  Director. (NSS)
