Student Protests Turn Violent Amidst Educational Institutions Shut Down in Bihar

Amidst the rising Covid 19 cases across the nation, some of the state governments have decided to shut the offline classes by educational institutions till April 11. However, some students went on a violent rampage against the decision in Rohtas District, Bihar.

Students Proceed With Violent Protests Against Online Education

The Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government recently announced the shut down of educational institutions across Bihar till April 11. The decision comes after Kumar consulted with the officials at a high-level meeting on Saturday for the recent surge in Covid 19 cases across India.

As per the reports, the protesting students set tyres on fire across the road connecting the mini-secretariat along with the main post office in the district headquarter at Sasaram.

Furthermore, the protesting students also threw stones at the police, destroyed many of the properties, private vehicles and shops around the area.

Nine Protesting Students Arrested; Police

As per the statement released by the District Magistrate Dharmendra Kumar, the police has arrested nine students so far. They all have been booked under IPC sections against vandalising public and government properties.

Reports suggest that the police took two hours to bring the situation in control. The riot like situation also led to a massive traffic jam which further delayed police action.

Kumar also said that the government’s decision to shut educational institutions cannot be rolled back as it is issued in public interest.

“The arson attack cannot be justified”, he said.

At the same time, many of the students and coaching Institute owners are of the opinion that shutting down educational institutions goes against the interest of the students. It hampers their syllabus.

To discuss the same, an association of coaching Institute conducted a meeting on Sunday.

As per the reports, Bihar has had 268,000 Covid positive cases so far. In total, India has crossed the 1 lakh mark for Covid cases.
