Students to be trained in drone operation at Telangana Aviation Academy

A batch of six students is being trained every week at Begumpet Airport by the Telangana State Aviation Academy (TSAA). The academy is preparing to welcome its third batch of students on Monday.

Despite starting a year and a half ago, the academy trained only 65 students last year due to the pandemic. Since reopening on February 29, 12 students have been trained. During a five-day course, students attend two days of theory and one day of practical operation, flying drones at Nadergul Airfield on the other days. They must then pass an exam in order to receive the Drone Pilot Certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Dinakar Devireddy, head of the Drone Academy, explained that drones are classified into four categories based on weight and size, namely, Nano, Small, Middle, and Large. Drones with higher weights can carry heavier weights and vice versa.

Dinakar said drones are used for several applications like agriculture, mining, afforestation, police stations, and many others. “Drones are capable of operating at different distances depending on their capacities. The drones that we have can travel up to 25 km from our surroundings,” he said, adding that the two manufacturing units in Hyderabad do not have the technology to manufacture drones that travel about 100 km.

Dinakar is optimistic that the technology will grow in the future. If students are interested in learning more about the drone training course, they can register with TSAA through their official website.

Drones have already been making the change in India. ‘Medicine from the Sky’ is a joint initiative of the Telangana government, World Economic Forum, NITI Aayog, and HealthNet Global (Apollo Hospitals), as part of which eight consortia have been selected to conduct BVLOS flights to deliver medical essentials to remote areas. For the first time in the country, drones began delivering life-saving medical supplies, including vaccines for Covid-19, beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), or a distance of 500 metres, in the district.
