In his statement on Wednesday, Raja Singh’s lawyer, Karuna Sagar Kashimshetty, a suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Goshamahal, claimed he received multiple death threats for taking up his case, and claimed that the threats will not stop him from practicing law.
Received about 3 calls threatening to kill me for taking up Raja Singh’s case since yesterday night… It’s my profession &threats of dick heads can’t deter me from practicing my profession, the lawyer said in a tweet.
As a result of a petition filed by the defense counsel before the Nampally court raising several irregularities in the arrest procedure, Raja Singh was granted bail on Tuesday. While Singh was being arrested, the Hyderabad police failed to follow the Supreme Court’s guidelines, the lawyer said.
In a “video” he released late at night on August 22 on YouTube, Raja Singh derogatorily addressed Prophet Muhammad in a “video.” He was arrested on Tuesday morning by police from the south zone. Several protestors who appeared in court were also lathi-charged by police.
Raja Singh was granted bail by a local court after his lawyer argued that the police had not issued a notice under CrPC 41(A) before the arrest.
As part of the IPC, the BJP leader was charged with promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, deliberate and malicious acts designed to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting their religion, as well as criminal intimidation.
Some members of the community criticized Singh’s remarks on Monday night, staging protests in several parts of Hyderabad calling for his arrest as a result.
The saffron party suspended him from the party following an outrage over his remarks.
According to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Singh used derogatory language against Prophet Mohammed.
By allowing their party members to use such low language about Prophet Mohammed, we call it Sadak Chap language, this is the official policy of the BJP to torture Muslims emotionally and mentally. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi told reporters that this was a deliberate attempt on the part of the BJP and they allowed their MLA to speak in it.
“They have not learned from Nupur Sharma’s remarks. This is the continuation of what Nupur Sharma said,” he said, alluding to the suspended party official’s remarks against Prophet Mohammed.
