Telangana: 1.5 crore patients to be screened in second phase of Kanti Velugu scheme

The second phase of the prestigious Kanti Velugu initiative, which will be launched across Telangana on January 18, will cover 1.5 crore people and distribute 55 lakh spectacles to needy patients.

The one-of-a-kind eye care initiative, which aims to conduct mass screening programs and distribute quality eyeglasses to poor patients for free, will last 100 days and cost nearly Rs. 200 crores.

The Telangana government has already released Rs. 200 crores for the smooth implementation of the second phase of the Kanti Velugu initiative, according to Health Minister T Harish Rao on Tuesday.

“Kanti Velugu is the brainchild of Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao and it’s the health department’s responsibility to implement the prestigious scheme efficiently. I urge all the health workers in Telangana to rise to the occasion and give their best and implement the scheme properly,” Harish Rao while interacting with District Medical and Health Officers (DM&HOs) from across Telangana on Tuesday, said.

Out of the 55 lakh free eyeglasses distributed, 30 lakh will be reading glasses, while the remaining 25 lakh will be prescription glasses designed specifically to correct vision problems and for full-time use.

The authorities intend to implement the Kanti Velugu scheme on a larger scale than in the first phase. In the first phase of the mass eye screening initiative, a total number of 1.5 crore individuals were screened while 50 lakh spectacles were provided without any cost.

The State Health Department intends to screen 1.5 million people and distribute 55 lakh eyeglasses in the second phase. The State Health Department will form 1500 medical teams in the second phase, up from 827 in the first.

The scheme’s objectives include conducting eye screening and vision tests for all citizens of the state, providing free eyeglasses, arranging free surgeries and other treatments, providing medicines for common eye diseases, and educating the public on the prevention of harmful eye diseases.
