Telangana: Baby exchange allegations result in protests at Mancherial hospital

On Wednesday, a woman alleged that her baby boy was exchanged with another baby girl at birth due to staff negligence at Mancherial Government General Hospital (GGH).

Mamatha from Royyalapalli village in Chennur mandal claimed that she was initially told she had given birth to a baby boy but was later told she had given birth to a baby girl. She accused Dr. Anitha and nurse Supriya of being callous in the operating room, which resulted in the exchange of babies.

Meanwhile, Bollam Pavani of Asifabad claimed that the doctor and nurse informed her that she had delivered a baby boy and that she would not part with her son.

Family members of both Mamatha staged a dharna, demanding that the theatre staff be held accountable for their negligence in handling the newborns and for the interchange of babies at birth.

Meanwhile, Pavani and her family staged a protest, accusing the staff of negligence, which contributed to the confusion.

GGH Medical Superintendent Dr Harishchandra Reddy told reporters that the babies had been handed over to Child and Women Department authorities and would be handed over to parents soon after a DNA test on the newborns was completed.

He also stated that steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Shishu Aadhar cards for newborns

The government of Telangana has begun issuing Shishu Aadhar cards to newborn babies at government hospitals. The initiative aims to assist infants in developing an identity.

The medical superintendent of Golconda Area Hospital, Dr Mohammad Mazharullah was quoted as saying, “The Telangana government is issuing Shishu Aadhar cards for newborn babies in Telangana. It is being done by the Government Commission of family welfare under Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Health Minister Harish Rao. The newborns are being enrolled for the Shishu Aadhar card.” He stated that the mother’s Aadhar card and Aadhar number are required for this. If this is not possible, the father’s Aadhar card can be used.

“We issue this within 24 hours of the birth of a child. This has been launched for the first time in Telangana. I thank the Telangana government, CM and the Health minister and the commissioner for family welfare,” he added.
