Telangana records a drop in C-section deliveries

State government efforts and strategic measures to reduce unnecessary C-sections while delivering a child have started to yield positive results in Telangana.

C-sections performed in private and government hospitals in the state have decreased for the first time since October. Last October, 61.41 percent of deliveries at private and government hospitals were C-sections, compared to 54.49 percent this October, a 7% decrease. Currently, 77 percent of deliveries in private hospitals and 44 percent in government hospitals in the State are C-sections.

Over the last year or so, a consistent effort has been made to educate pregnant women and their family members about the importance of having a safe and normal delivery.

The main focus is on the fact that practicing a few simple exercises and techniques can help relieve pain and discomfort and prepare a pregnant woman’s body to deliver the child normally, says Superintendent, Modern Government Maternity Hospital, Petlaburj, Dr P Malathi. “That’s why, every day, we conduct a series of exercises for pregnant women in the hospital itself,” she says.

Pregnant women at government maternity hospitals also go through a series of counseling sessions, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of normal delivery, with junior and senior doctors.

“Senior most doctors are seeing primi women, those who are pregnant for the first time, and this makes them assured about normal delivery,” Dr Malathi

The health department has also introduced initiatives to encourage private healthcare establishments to avoid unnecessary C-sections. Health Minister, T Harish Rao conducted meetings with the management of several private hospitals in districts to encourage more normal deliveries.

Using the services of midwives to ensure safe, enjoyable, and normal deliveries for pregnant women is another major measure implemented by the State government. Recently, 407 midwives were assigned to various government maternal healthcare facilities.
