Telangana Congress Government’s 24-Hour Free Electricity Promise

According to a Congress whitepaper, the state of Telangana is having considerable hurdles in supplying the promised free electricity to farmers and homes.

Through the Gruha Jyothi project, which is estimated to cost the state exchequer Rs 27,055 crore per year, the Telangana Congress pledged 24-hour free electricity to farmers and 200 units of free power to all houses in the state.

According to data from the Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA), Telangana had 1.70 crore power connections as of fiscal year 2021-22, with 1.23 crore home and 26.63 lakh agricultural. With power costs currently at Rs 5.10 per unit for the first 200 units consumed, the government will need to allocate Rs 15,055 crore per year for 1.23 crore home consumers and approximately Rs 12,000 crore for free electricity for farmers. With a greater number of connections across the state, electricity costs may rise.

The Gruha Jyothi initiative, which includes free power for farmers, is scheduled to cost roughly Rs 27,055 crore each year and an estimated Rs 1,35,275 crore over the current government’s five-year term. The state administration would face major financial challenges in achieving these pledges.
