Telangana Govt’s initiatives enable students from weaker sections to grab more MBBS seats

The Telangana government’s consistent efforts to increase medical seats have now enabled a large number of students from backward communities and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) to realize their dream of becoming a doctor.

A year ago, a higher rank in medical entrance exams meant that local OBC students had a difficult time getting a medical seat in Telangana. However, as of this academic year, thanks to the State government’s successful efforts, a large number of such students have been able to obtain an MBBS seat in Telangana itself.

For example, perhaps for the first time in the country, a local student with a rank of 8, 78, 200 has been assigned a medical seat in Telangana this academic year.

The convenor quota has created numerous opportunities for BC, SC, ST, and BC-B students to obtain a medical seat.

A slew of Telangana government initiatives, such as opening eight new medical colleges, reserving 85 percent of B-category medical seats for local students, and increasing ST reservation from 6 percent to 10 percent, have all played a significant role in increasing the pool of MBBS seats.

The number of category-A convenor quota seats available for Telangana students during the last academic year, 2021-22, was 3038. The number of MBBS seats has now increased to 4094 as a result of the establishment of eight medical colleges in the same category.

The decision to increase ST reservation from 6% to 10% has also played an important role in increasing MBBS seats. Students from the ST category had access to 223 medical seats in the previous academic year (2021-22), and this year (429 medical seats) are available. Last year, an OBC student with a rank of 1, 46, 391 was unable to obtain a medical seat. However, due to a larger pool of medical seats this year, a student with a higher rank of 2, 09, 646 was able to secure an MBBS seat.

Women candidates have also continued to dominate the medical field, acquiring the lion’s share, 63 percent of medical seats during this academic year.
