Telangana: KTR tells weavers to teach BJP a befitting lesson in Munugode

KT Rama Rao (KTR), Telangana handlooms and textiles minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working President, appealed to the weavers’ community to teach the BJP a befitting lesson in the Munugode by-poll.

KTR stated that Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister in Indian history to burden the weavers with heavy tax, as well as scrap insurance and welfare schemes intended for them.

KTR detailed several progressive steps taken by the TRS government for the welfare of the weavers’ community during a teleconference with Munugode handloom weavers.

He stated that the TRS government has allotted Rs 1200 crores per year for the welfare of the handloom sector, provided a 40% subsidy on yarn and dyes through Chenetha Mithra, introduced Rs 5 lakh insurance coverage for handloom and power loom workers through Nethanna Ku Bhima, and implemented the Nethannaku Cheyutha scheme.

During COVID-19, the Telangana government, through Nethannaku Cheyutha, sanctioned Rs 100 crores to weavers well ahead of the maturity date. The scheme is being maintained in light of the benefit it has provided to the community.

KTR further stated that the TRS government has waived weavers’ loans up to Rs 1 lakh. This has benefited approximately 10,500 people. He also stated that an integrated training, production, and sales center in Narayanpet, as well as a handlooms park in Gadwal, are being established.

He claimed that the BJP had disbanded the All India Handlooms Board and the All India Handicrafts Board, as well as scrapped savings and insurance schemes for weavers. In addition, the yarn subsidy for weavers has been reduced from 40% to 15%.

KTR also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi increased the GST on handlooms and textiles from 5% to 12%. “Though Modi rode to power on the swadeshi sentiment, he is pushing the handlooms sector into crisis,” KTR added.

The minister has urged the weavers’ community to teach BJP a lesson in the Munugode by-elections. He has promised to work for the benefit of weavers in Koyalagudem, Puttapaka, Gattupal, Choutuppal, Chunduru, Munugode, Narayanapuram, and Lingotam.
