Telangana Medical Council Suspends Licenses of Two Doctors for Negligence

Private orthopedics in Hyderabad has had his license suspended for six months by the Telangana State Medical Council after he operated on the healthy right leg of a patient instead of the left leg. The incident occurred when the patient, whose identity remains undisclosed, had been admitted to the hospital for surgery on their left leg. However, due to a grave error on the part of Dr. Karan M. Patil, the surgeon in charge, the patient had operated on their right leg instead. Realizing the mistake soon after, the doctors proceeded to operate on the correct leg.

The incident had come to light after the patient filed a complaint with the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO). The DMHO had conducted an investigation into the matter and found Dr. Patil guilty of negligence. The case was then taken up by the Telangana State Medical Council, which issued an order suspending the doctor’s license for six months on Thursday. Council chairman V. Rajalingam had stated that the suspension was necessary to maintain the integrity and quality of healthcare services in the state.

In a separate case, a private doctor in Mancherial district, Ch. Srikanth, has also had his license suspended for three months by the council. This was after the doctor had failed to refer a Dengue patient to a hospital with better facilities, which had resulted in the patient’s unfortunate demise. The patient’s family had filed a complaint with the district collector, who had then forwarded the case to the council for investigation. The council had found Dr. Srikanth guilty of neglecting the patient’s well-being and ordered the suspension of his license for three months.

Both doctors have been asked to surrender their certificates to the council. However, they may appeal against their suspensions within a period of 60 days. The cases of Dr. Patil and Dr. Srikanth highlight the need for greater vigilance and accountability on the part of healthcare professionals and institutions in ensuring the safety and well-being of patients.
