Telangana MP requests people to turn off lights from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm tonight

Green India Challenge (GIC) founder and MP J. Santosh Kumar has requested the people across the State to turn off all electric appliances, including lights, for an hour on Saturday as part of the Earth Hour, a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature.

He tweeted: Now is the time, We from #GreenIndiaChallenge request you to take part in @earthhour tonight from 8-30 to 9-30 by switching off all the electric appliances including lights in ur homes. This means a lot for the future of us, come on.

The World Wide Fund for Nature describes the event as a sign of “unity” and “hope” for a more sustainable future.

Earth Hour aims to spread awareness and spark global conversations on safeguarding nature, tackling the climate crisis, and working together to shape a brighter future for all of us, the WWF says on the Earth Hour website.

Other efforts to combat climate change have resulted from the Earth Hour campaign.

What is Earth Hour?

The World Wide Fund for Nature has established a global initiative known as Earth Hour. The yearly event encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to switch off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on a certain day at the end of March, as a symbol of devotion to the environment. It began in 2007 as a lights-out event in Sydney, Australia.

When Holy Saturday falls on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour is often moved a week earlier than usual.

A 2014 study released in Energy Research and Social Science collated 274 measurements of observed changes in electricity demand induced by Earth Hour in ten countries over a six-year period and discovered that the events lowered electricity use by an average of 4%.
