Telangana power utility employees end strike; officials agree to reinstate 200 terminated artisans

The strike by the Telangana Vidyut Employees Union and Ittehad Electricity Contract Employees Union was called off after 200 artisans were terminated from their service on Wednesday.

The department reported that the strike had no effect on the state’s power generation, transmission, and distribution, although 20 percent abstained from duty on Tuesday.

It was revealed at a meeting where the TS TRANSCO and GENCO chairman D Prabhakar Rao and TSSPDCL chairman G Raghuma Reddy held a discussion with AIMIM Malakpet MLA Ahmed Balala. In the Itehad Electricity Contract Employees Union, Balala said that the strike had been called off unconditionally and that the employees would join duty immediately afterward.

In addition, Balala said that the management of the power utility had agreed to resolve the artisans’ demands as soon as possible.

Following the department’s agreement to reinstate the 200 artisans whose services were terminated on Tuesday, they have called off their strike.

“AIMIM would take up the issues of the artisans with the state government and try to ensure justice for them,” said MLA Balala.

Protests of employees

On March 24, around 30,000 employees participated in the first massive dharna at Vidyut Soudha, the management invited unions for a round of talks.

The management stuck to its earlier decision to offer a six percent raise to electricity employees by the end of the meeting.

Several JAC leaders expressed disappointment with management’s stand on the pay revision commission, which has been pending since April 1.

In support of six demands for artisans in power utilities, Telangana Vidyut Employees Union and Ittehad Electricity Contract Employees Union had declared a strike starting Tuesday, April 24.

The Union proposed a strike on the revision of pay and allowances of employees, artisans and pensioners, implementation of the GPF in place of the EPF for employees hired between February 1, 1999, and August 31, 2004, and several other issues related to employees and artisans.

In spite of this, the chairman and managing director of TS TRANSCO and GENCO, D Prabhakar Rao, stated that the strike did not have any significant impact on the state’s power supply.

The management also responded to the union’s call and took the necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout Telangana, Prabhakar Rao said.
