Telangana: Preparations underway for phase 2 of Kanti Velugu

With Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao expected to launch the second phase of Kanti Velugu on January 18, Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the State have been directed to make elaborate preparations for the program.

The adult population will be screened for vision problems at the ward level for 100 days. To that end, the MAUD department has directed the Municipal Commissioners to ensure adequate logistical support for the program’s successful implementation.

Municipal Commissioners have been directed to provide suitable government accommodation in ULBs for the Ward-level Kanti Velugu camps. The camp locations will be determined in collaboration with the respective DMHOs and Urban Primary Health Centre Medical Officers.

Municipal Commissioners have been given instructions to make the necessary logistics arrangements, such as setting up chairs, drinking water, and toilet facilities at the camps for the convenience of those attending the camps. They were told to ensure that the camp sites had reliable power and sanitation.

ULB personnel will be stationed at the camps to ensure proper coordination in the planning and conduct of the camps. Municipal Commissioners have also been directed to assist DMHOs in mobilizing the public to attend medical camps.

On August 15, 2018, the Telangana government launched the Kanti Velugu program. It was planned for five months and cost Rs 106 crore to conduct eye screening tests of the entire population of the state.

As part of the program, eye screenings are performed, spectacles and medicines are distributed, and free surgeries and other treatments are arranged for the needy.

The authorities intend to implement the Kanti Velugu scheme on a larger scale than in the first phase. In the first phase of the mass eye screening initiative, a total number of 1.5 crore individuals were screened while 50 lakh spectacles were provided without any cost.
