Telangana: Rs 17,700 crore to be spent for Dalit Bandhu this year

During the financial year 2022-23, the State government will extend the Dalit Bandhu scheme to 2.82 lakh eligible beneficiaries for the socio-economic empowerment of the Dalit community. More than 31,000 eligible families have benefited from the scheme in the state as of November 20.

So far, the State government has spent Rs.3,100 crore in 2021-22 and is spending another Rs.17,700 crore this year to implement the scheme across the State. In 2021-22, the scheme provided grants of Rs 10 lakh to approximately 100 eligible individuals from 118 Assembly constituencies.

Each eligible Dalit family will receive a grant of Rs 10 lakh under the scheme, with no bank linkage. Beneficiaries can use the funds to start their own businesses or improve their livelihood opportunities. The Dalit Bandhu Rakshana Nidhi was also established with an equal contribution of Rs 10,000 from the beneficiary and the State government, which will be used to assist the beneficiary in the event of a crisis.

In July of last year, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao initiated the Dalit Bandhu scheme in the Huzurabad Assembly constituency of Karimnagar district. Due to the scheme’s saturation, approximately 15,402 Dalit families benefited in the Huzurabad constituency alone. While the majority of beneficiaries purchased taxis, others chose a variety of livelihood opportunities such as tractors, medical shops, and fertilizer shops in addition to dairy, food processing units, and eateries among others.

Similarly, 75 families benefited from the scheme in Vasalamarri gram panchayat, which was also implemented in Madhira, Thungathurthy, Atchampet, and Jukkal constituencies, where 4,808 people took advantage of it.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had already directed officials to prepare an action plan for the scheme’s effective implementation. He wished for them to ensure that the Dalits benefit from the scheme and move forward, putting an end to decades of discrimination.
